A Tail of Community
St. Louis houses a mythical, unexpected secret: There is a growing community of mermaids. The people who participate in this community treat it as any other hobby. They spend time together, buying a variety of different tails, meeting with their ‘pods’ to swim and holding other mermaid-related events. Because they live in Missouri, these mermaids don’t swim in waves on crystal-clear beaches. Instead, they dive in community pools, sit near park lakes that do not allow swimming or float down rivers in the Ozarks. For many of these people, they began participating in this community simply because they loved mermaids growing up. This activity allows them a place to express that fondness.
